Absolutely fascinating, if progressively less likely, this is Joseph Losey's Kafkaesque spiral of a film in which Alain Delon is the wartime antiques dealer who becomes fatally obsessed with a man who shares his name. Losey lets it go on a bit too long, but does round it off splendidly at the end, which is fully in keeping with the theme as developed by the writers. Delon is suitably fraught; Losey's cool, detached direction catches his helpless struggles in a labyrinth from which there's no exit.
