A romantic farce set in New York's Little Italy - but totally free of the Mafia.
The film criss-crosses between several couples who all seem to be affected by a huge full moon:
A young widow (Cher) accepts a proposal but falls for her fiancé's estranged brother; her father takes his mistress to the opera; while his wife finds herself dining with a man who has been jilted by his young student, just as he was before in an incident witnessed by the young widow...
It's a sort of La Ronde, as you can see, although director Norman Jewison and the film's music rather overdo the amore and Italian openness.
Still, there are winning performances from Cher (collecting an Oscar), Nicolas Cage as the hairy ape who sweeps her off her feet, and Olympia Dukakis and Vincent Gardenia as her parents.
A little slow at times, the film becomes more amusing as it goes on, and the personalities of the actors begin to make an impact on their roles.
As the theme song says: 'When the moon hits the sky like a big pizza pie, that's amore.' This film sets out to prove no more than that.
