There can't be too many horror films set inside prison. Director Herlin and writer C Courtney Joiner give both styles of film full value here, combining the toughest possible elements from both genres. The sadistic warden (Lane Smith,a Richard Nixon lookalike hidden for years in a character roles) is the villain of the piece, a man who had an innocent prisoner sent to the chair for an`inside` killing he didn't commit. The hero is his victim, returning supernaturally from the grave when the prison in which they clashed is reopened years later. The inevitable deaths that start to happen once the avenging force is released are ingeniously contrived and staged with considerable panache. Horror fans can look forward to a thoroughly grisly night out on the town, while prison-film aficionados will find that this film contains all the fondly remembered cliches tightly wrapped within some (literally) eletrifying special effects. Performance are appropriately full throttle in this dose of horrific hokum.
