Recruited to the ranks of musical Thespians here is rock singer Joan Jett (real name: Joan Jett Larkin! ), who gives a more than competent performance in this slightly alienating drama, as an unmarried mum who sings with her brother (Michael J Fox) in a rock group, and is the despair of her faintly fuddled and unforgiving mother (Gena Rowlands). Rowlands's performance seems to have suffered from too close a study of Bette Davis and indeed it's difficult to raise too much interest in what happens to any of these characters, although the performances are solid and the music is well performed, some of it by the stars.
