A brave attempt to equal the tear-soaked 1923 version of this hoary old romance, which starred Lillian Gish and Ronald Colman. This time it's Helen Hayes and Clark Gable in the wartorn story of the Italian girl who, believing her love killed in the war, joins a convent. The stars are both fine, but there's little chemistry between them and the film's impact leans heavily on its now rather outdated structure. Pretty bloodless.
