Superstardom was around the corner for Daniel Day Lewis (without the hyphen in his name in this one) but you could never have guessed it from this atrocious hillbilly comedy with a misbegotten central idea. It features Day Lewis as an Englishman in America given the task of buying a newly-discovered Renoir from an eccentric Southerner, played by Harry Dean Stanton. All of the performances are bad (quite a feat with this cast) but script and direction are worse. Day Lewis' dedication in dragging his bag-of-bones body through the rain in the altogether is painful to behold and probably led to him beefing up his physique for subsequent roles. A complete shambles.
