Something went dramatically wrong with this film about the young Solidarity priest murdered by Polish secret agents in 1984. Too great an attempt has been made, for one thing, to dramatise the story, causing a bevy of good British actors to overact like mad. And Holland has, in her sincerity as a Polish patriot, allowed the enterprise to go on for far too long. Lambert is adequate if not terribly charismatic as the priest. Hollywood's Ed Harris strives mightily to pull it all together as the tortured secret policeman who yearns to kill him and spare him at the same time, but Tim Roth and Timothy Spall as his associates give garish performances more suited to a Carry On film. The sad thing about the whole sorry business is that it's such a limp and laboured tribute to a genuine martyr.
