Preposterous, humourless psycho-horror (supposedly based on a true story! ) from director David Cronenberg. Although well performed (in a dual role) by Jeremy Irons, who stands alone in keeping unintentional mirth at bay for three-quarters of the plot, the film's unconvincing script and lack of light and shade eventually do for it more effectively than could be managed by either of Irons' twin surgeons, the battier of whom (by a whisker) craves to create steel implements for operating on mutant women (really! ). All the elements that have kept laughter at bay in previous Cronenberg gore-feasts seem to desert him at once here. A ludicrous and deeply unpleasant farrago.
