A Jewish Moonstruck, though not quite as good. It's a romance of embarrassing moments, with Amy Irving as the bookstore girl from uptown horrified to find herself the victim of old-style matchmaking with Sam the pickle-man from downtown. There are some pleasant patches in subsequent developments, with the dry-humoured Peter Riegert deservedly getting all the best lines as Sam: a beautifully understated performance. Irving is competent-plus as the girl and, if a few unlikely plot acrobatics towards the end rather rob the film of its climactic emotional impact, the odds are that you'll still be hoping Irving makes the 'right' decisions before the curtain comes down on the story.
