Billy Wilder's last great film, a puzzle picture co-written with his old partner-in-crime I A L Diamond, and adapted from a short story by former actor Tom Tryon. Why should a seemingly ageless actress throw herself under a train for no apparent reason? You may well guess most of the answers before the end, but the fascination lies in the picture's sheer style, its contemplation of celebrity and its portrait of people trapped within their own images.
