Solid entertainment from director Mike Nichols with a plum role for Melanie Griffith as the breathy but brainy secretary who has a business degree but not the right background for success.
Escaping the clutches of one lecherous boss after another, she goes to work for a woman (Sigourney Weaver), an outwardly friendly broker but a treacherous piranha of a woman who swallows competitors whole and ruthlessly steals the first bright idea Griffith sets in front of her.
Griffith finds out about the deception and determines to put through the deal involved herself. This being a warm-hearted sort of film, with few lapses into bad taste, you can guess subsequent developments; but the cast handle their roles with panache and skill, especially Griffith, Weaver (a vivacious villainess), Harrison Ford (an unexpectedly subtle comedian), and Philip Bosco as the big fish Griffith hopes to hook.
Griffith is terrific, whether determined, dampened, drunk, dejected or radiant. And Weaver, as the businesswoman who views marriage as a merger ('I've indicated I'm receptive to an offer') is ripely enjoyable in a decidedly different role. Not a great film, but one you'll enjoy.
