Ken Russell, that most mercurial of directors, managed to balance high camp and genuine horror modestly successfully in this, his own adaptation of Bram ('Dracula') Stoker's gothic novel. Amanda Donohoe is evilly seductive as the wicked and often scantily-clad Lady Silvia Marsh and manages to dodge your laughter until near the end. By and large, though, the end-of-pier camp charade looks cheap and has acting to match. And its intentional jokes are feeble and fall pretty flat. It's certainly one of a kind though, with its streaks of humour, titillation and terror, coupled to some outrageous special effects. All this and Hugh Grant too. Stoker purists will be outraged.
