Horror films almost always ask us to suspend our disbelief for the chills to bite. But here's a would-be chiller that's just to silly for that to happen. A crazed killer, with some belief in occult powers, transfers his soul to the body of a doll before he dies. Quite why the doll doesn't come to life before it's bought by a child's mother from a tramp is only one of the mysteries of this film but, under the name of Chuckie, he then sets out to revenge himself on the partner who betrayed him and the cop who gunned him down. There's actually more to the plot, but it's even more preposterous, culminating in the doll gradually becoming human, thus giving the heroes a chance to kill it. Director Holland finally brings this lame nag home via several false climaxes as it staggers towards the 90-minute mark. Chuckie's worth a chuckle here: no more. Better, though, than the sequels that followed.
