Richard Dreyfuss excels as a small-time actor who spends a deliciously dangerous year impersonating the newly-killed president of the island republic of Parador. A bit over-the-top at times, but fun to be with and, thanks to this central performance, you really do care what happens to Dreyfuss in the end. Raul Julia is a little more restrained than usual as the power behind the throne and all the company takes the comedy seriously enough for you to enjoy it. Especially relishable is Dreyfuss' first speech to the nation when he calls on lines from Man of La Mancha in his hour of need. Only minus: a noisy music score by Maurice Jarre.
