Strong and scary stuff, this tough romantic thriller gets progressively less believable as the plot goes along. Debra Winger plays another of her wry loners as a Department of Justice agent sent to investigate a Mid-West widower farmer (Tom Berenger), suspected of carrying out a contract killing. In so doing, she not only falls in love with him but uncovers a vast nest of rats in the shape of an Aryan supremacy movement akin to the Ku Klux Klan with a network of agents all over America. Solid performances all round: a pity about that credibility gap.
