Somewhere between Dirty Dancing, Fame, Blackboard Jungle and 42nd Street lies Sing, as good a bad film as you'll see. The kids are putting on a show, but the adults are closing down the school. Nice Jewish Hannah is pitched in with Italianate delinquent Dominic as co-organisers of the Brooklyn school's last-ever 'sing' and guess what happens? No kidding! Hannah's hard-hearted mamma won't come to the concert... . but will she relent at the last moment? Is the Pope still a Catholic? The cliches are deeper than the songsheets in this one, but it's richly enjoyable, pumped full of joie-de-vivre with tuneful music and brilliantly executed production numbers. The New York critics who thought it was performed without enthusiasm must have rocks for brains. Lorraine Bracco top-stars as the dynamo teacher who puts on the show, and she can dance as well as act. And the emotive surge of the musical climax would surely bring a tear to the elephant's eye than the corn is as high as in this glitzy, supercharged package.
