David Lean's Oscar-winning account of EM Forster's novel, lavishly filmed in India and set during the Twenties, sees an impressive Judy Davis playing a young Englishwoman who goes to India with her fiancé's mother (Peggy Ashcroft). Dazed and confused, she brings a charge of rape against a friendly young Indian doctor (Victor Banerjee)... Lean's last movie proves a great one: Dame Peggy is excellent, and deservedly won an Oscar.
