Director Terry Gilliam's Orwellian tale is packed with streaks of surrealist humour - and a great cast - and is a marvellous fantasy take on the author's classic '1984'. Working at Information Retrieval, Sam (Jonathan Pryce) is a faceless clerk who spends most of his time dreaming of flying through the sky as a crusading birdman and rescuing his ideal girl. Then, one day, she materialises, in the form of subversive trucker Jill (Kim Greist) who's wanted by the State. While his private world (and his flat) is disintegrating, Sam's infatuation with Jill and his determination to save her leads him down nightmare corridors from which there's no escape. And Robert De Niro crops up in a great cameo as a revolutionary heating engineer! A wonderfully bizarre film from the master ex-Python.
