Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall play bolshie high school students who are stuck in detention one Saturday morning and forced to confront issues about their lives. John Hughes' essential Eighties Brat Pack aims high, is often perceptive and is filled with funny and smart moments. Hughes wrote the screenplay to the film, which was originally called The Lunch Bunch, in just two days. Filmed entirely in sequence, it originally ran about two and a half hours, but was cut by a nervous film studio to 97 minutes and became a major hit.
