After The Elephant Man came The Elephant Boy. Rocky (Eric Stoltz) is born with a kind of dysplasia - a one-in-22 million chance - which deforms his face to an alarming degree. His biker mother, nicely played by Cher, sends him to a normal school, where he proves extremely bright. The story of Rocky's fight to live an ordinary life is told with a large amount of tender loving care by director Peter Bogdanovich, even though it's draped in an extremely tough exterior. Good performances, too, from Stoltz as the boy and Sam Elliott as his mother's charismatic on-off lover.
