This film combines Baum's Ozma of Oz and The Land of Oz into a new story, which takes place after the events of The Wizard of Oz.
The film opens in Kansas with Auntie Em and Uncle Henry building a new house and worrying about Dorothy's recurring bad dreams of her adventures in Oz.
So, Em and Henry decide that Dorothy (Fairuza Balk) might be able to be cured by Doctor Worley (Nicol Williamson), who uses electroshock therapy.
Dorothy manages to escape the sanitarium, and is taken back to Oz only to discover that the munchkins are gone and The Yellow Brick Road is in ruins.
So, Dorothy comes to the rescue, hoping to save The Emerald City and save The Cowardly Lion and The Tin Woodsman who have been turned to stone by an evil king.
First she must locate The Scarecrow, but on the way she teams up with some new friends for some fresh adventures.
Helping her are a man with wooden limbs and the head of a jack-o-lantern (Jack Pumpkinhead), a wind-up robot (Tik Tok) and a moose's head named Gump.
There is also a hen who took the ride to Oz with Dorothy and has some of the best lines in the movie.
Return To Oz is an unpredictable trip to a fantasy land packed with some stunning visuals.
Although some scenes may be frightening for very young children, if you enjoyed the original it's worth watching to see what happened next.
