David Huddleston comes across as a department store Santa, while Dudley Moore chases around manically as Santa's go-ahead elf helper, Patch. Nothing lives up to the magical opening scenes, especially when the action switches to modern day New York, so it's not surprising that the film was a $50million Christmas turkey, taking less than half its cost at the American box office. John Lithgow is a bright spot as a greedy toy maker.
