A thriller whose plot is as tangled as it's unlikely. Alain Delon stars in this Franco-American enterprise as a small-time gigolo who escapes from gangster pursuers only to find himself in an even more inescapable web of plot and counterplot at a weird Riviera mansion. Here he makes up a quartet of crooked people, each a little more unbalanced than the last. The atmosphere is nicely overloaded with sex and evil, and Jane Fonda certainly crackles in a Bardot-type role, but there's too little central theme to constantly hold the interest and the plot is so wilfully difficult that at times the characters have to explain their own motives by thinking aloud on screen. The action, sparse though it is, is quite exciting when it comes.
