This seven-Oscar triumph (including Best Picture and Best Director for Sydney Pollack) is a superb nostalgic romance about a Danish woman, Karen Dinesen Blixen (Meryl Streep), who finds herself running a farm in Africa in 1913 after her husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer) decides to opt out for the life of a hunter. The first half of this ravishingly photographed film is brilliantly paced and immaculately acted, though greatness drifts slightly away in the second half, abetted by a miscast Robert Redford. Streep, however, is amazing and Brandauer gives first-rate support. Audrey Hepburn turned down the role of Karen.
