A pleasant surprise: an old-fashioned comedy-thriller-whodunit whose comic overtones gradually give way to the plot in as painless a way as possible. A lothario dentist in a wealthy area is bumped off. The heroine, an ex-journalist and mother-of-two to whom he had made the standard passing pass, finds her inquisitive nose twitching when several of her friends turn out to have been involved with the victim. In this role, which may look at first glance like a Goldie Hawn reject, Susan Sarandon gave one of 1985's best performances - not easy in this kind of lightweight entertainment. Whether wisecracking, vulnerable, can't-leave-it-alone curious or sick-to-the-stomach brave, Sarandon uses her squirrel eyes and expressive face to get it just right in a highly intelligent performance.
