Silly but endearing, and pacily directed by Michael Dinner, this screwball comedy refreshingly has a beginning, middle and end, with the faintly ineffectual hero proving himself to the heroine. You won't believe the plot for a moment, but you can't help enjoying it for all that. The amiable Judge Reinhold is right on the money as the librarian forced to impersonate a cop friend when that worthy is drafted to take part in a police dance show. Not only does Reinhold get hooked on the dancing, but falls for a feisty lady cop (Meg Tilly) who's as likely to lay him out with a left hook as kiss him. It's a lightweight lark, but almost everything about it is fun and some of it funny as well. Harvey Keitel turns up as a bank robber and Austin Pendleton does a very amusing cameo as a gun shop salesman. You'll also spot John Turturro, Joe Mantegna, Fred Gwynne and Anthony Zerbe. Shame on the makers for not having the courage of their convictions and only showing us the climactic dance show under the closing credits.
