Two out of work actors go on holiday to the country... and then come back again. But it is the writing and the performances that make this a true masterpiece of modern British cinema. Set at the end of the Sixties, down-and-out Thesps, I (Paul McGann) and Withnail (Richard E Grant), eagerly await their next dole cheque and opening time just to keep warm. Then Withnail suggests that they should go to the country to get away from it all. But first they have to convince his eccentric and very camp Uncle Monty (Richard Griffiths) to give them the key to his cottage in Penrith. Once there, the lads' efforts to keep body and soul together are often hilarious, especially when Monty makes a surprise visit with more than just fine wine on offer. The two leading actors work fantasically well together, and the film is full of classic lines and laugh-out-loud moments. Simply brilliant.
