A kooky comedy-drama that continued to prove Rosanna Arquette to be a poor picker of scripts. Even so, the liquid-lipped Arquette gives a luminous performance here as the small-town girl whose life has been blighted by a passionate first love which ended with her pregnant and stabbing the uncaring father. Now she must choose between a life of drudgery and regret or take a chance on the set designer for a travelling theatre group (Eric Roberts) with whom she takes the first hesitant footsteps towards a new relationship. That the film comes close to touching the emotions in its closing stages is a tribute to its actors, Arquette, Roberts and the underrated Mare Winningham, rather than its toothless script and slack direction. Nobody much fancied it, and they were no fools.
