With a plot that rather rambles through its 13-year span, this is nonetheless a graphic and hard-edged portrait of the thrills and spills of a dangerous sport. Dirk Bogarde serves early notice of his promise of being more than just a matinee idol, giving depth and dimension to the speedway rider who starts as a cocky young ace and graduates to fighting for riders' rights through a union. The action scenes are, for their time, vividly done. The supporting cast abounds in notable character actors from the post-war British cinema, including Bill Owen, Sidney James, Cyril Cusack, Thora Hird, James Hayter and Cyril Chamberlain.
