John Howard Davies, later the producer of TV's Fawlty Towers, but here, fresh from his runaway success as Oliver Twist in the 1948 classic, is, although a touch too upper-class, still unsettling as the slightly sinister boy who, once aboard his rocking horse, can predict the winner in any given race - and looks set to solve the financial problems of his spendthrift mother (Valerie Hobson) and gambler father (Hugh Sinclair). As might be expected from the star of Twist, Master Davies brings this version of a D H Lawrence novella to chilling, disturbing, but fascinating life. Other performances are also good.
