Van Johnson and Vera Miles came over from America to make this first-class mystery thriller, a must for all amateur detectives. Having a good plot is half the battle and director Jack Cardiff - a former cameraman who makes much of the seedy Liverpool locations - has fine material to work with: an adaptation by Kenneth Hyde of an A J Cronin novel. Writer and director manage to fit the pieces of the puzzle together with considerable skill and, as a bonus, Van Johnson as the tenacious hero has seldom seemed more convincing.
