Michael Caine stars for the third time as Harry Palmer in this lusty spy thriller with a memorable icebound climax.

Ken Russell directs with extravagant gusto and among the villains are Karl Malden and Ed Begley, who clearly relishes his role as a mad general.

Another veteran in the cast is Oscar Homolka, that gruff character actor first seen in Palmer-land in Funeral in Berlin, a year earlier.

Michael Caine's third outing as Harry Palmer is not quite as good as the first. Nonetheless, the performances of Karl Marlden and and Francois Dolemec are excellant. However, Ed Begley's performance as General Midwinter is over the top and Ken Russell's direction is patchy in places. As a thriller,it is quite watchable.
