Paul Newman is ideally cast as the carefree guy sentenced to two years on a chain gang.
He becomes known as Cool Hand Luke because of his devil-may-care attitude and determination to escape.
Grittily acted (George Kennedy won an Oscar as another prisoner) and powerfully made, the film also became famous for its phrase, 'Put him in the Box' - the sentence for prisoners who incur the wrath of their guards.
Look out for the memorable egg-eating sequence.
