Arrows to the left of you, arrows to the right of you. And if you weren't careful, you might have got one in the eye when you first saw this vigorous Western, for it was originally released in 3-D. Guy Madison and Frank Lovejoy make forthright leads, while the supporting cast is full of gritty humour - notably Dick Wesson, a 'scat' comedian who should have gone further in films, Steve Brodie, Onslow Stevens, Neville Brand and Henry Kulky, all playing to familiar characterisations. As the women kidnapped by Indians, both Helen Westcott and Vera Miles prove more than mere ciphers in the story. Max Steiner's music skilfully underscores the action between sometimes turgid dialogue scenes. Film buffs will spot that Madison's character name, Miles Archer, is the same as that of Humphrey Bogart's partner in The Maltese Falcon! And sharp eyes will pick up the major action gaffe at the end, when Onslow Stevens' shoulder injury at Feather River switches from the left to the right as he crosses the water.
