One of the best examples of Cavalry-and-Indians westerns from the Sixties, this Sam Peckinpah-inspired, Arnold Laven-directed adventure film, full of action, colour, a gutsy music score and firm characterisation, is a story about the Cavalry as a master, rather than about individual people. Tom Tryon is a rugged hero, and there are well grafted portrayals from Michael Anderson Jr, Slim Pickens, James Caan (as a garrulous Irishman) and Peter Breck. As the frontier scout, Harve Presnell's magnetically sincere acting exudes a quiet authority and natural casual humour that makes one instantly identify with the character. A cohesive, gripping, anti-war Western, with brilliant colour photography by veteran cinematographer James Wong Howe.
