A dreamlike horror film set in Ireland, eerily photographed in black and white by Charles Hannawalt, and revolving round a series of axe murders which have some connection with the death of a young girl who drowned in a castle lake eight years before. It was produced by Roger Corman, who made the distinctive series of `Edgar Allan Poe' chillers in the Sixties, and written and directed by Francis Coppola - his first major screen work. The plot is uncluttered by sideline issues, and the atmosphere genuinely sinister.
