The first film to be directed by Ismail Merchant, the producer long associated with director James Ivory on such films as Shakespeare Wallah, Bombay Talkie and Hullabaloo Over Bonnie and Georgie's Pictures. Merchant's documentary impressively conveys his long-time fascination with the lives of the professional singing and dancing girls and their families who live in a tenement in Pavanpul in Bombay and there is superb interior cinematography by cameramen Vishu Mathur and Rajesh Joshi.
