A very, very tough Burt Reynolds thriller about crime, cops, corruption and all that. Blood runs down the walls and people get blown away, but Reynolds, who also directed the film, still find time for an intelligently-presented obsessive affair with a high-class hooker, played by the British actress Rachel Ward. She's used to better advantage and clearly given more help by her director than in any previous film. As a director, in fact, Reynolds is full of ideas, even if, like his character (who also loses a couple of fingers in a close-your-eyes torture scene), he occasionally loses his cool. But it's good to see Henry Silva back in the role he does best - a cold-blooded killer - while the rest of the cast is full of familiar faces doing their thing and relishing the chance to give vent to fusillades of four-letter words as well as bullets. The action goes on and on: no fan of blood-soaked cop thrillers could ask for more.
