There's some solid star power in this flop action thriller, but it still runs like a poor pilot for a TV series and bypassed cinemas in the UK. Antonio Banderas and Lucy Liu are top ex-government agents charged with killing each other, but they team up to fight a greater common enemy (charismatic Gregg Henry). There's plenty of explosive action, as Liu machine-guns down half the population of Vancouver, but you're never quite sure in this chaotic mess what's going on or why. Ironic, then, that the director's name is Kaos! Contrary to original stories, it's not based on a computer game: the 2001 game Ecks vs. Sever was developed from an early script for the film. Banderas was fifth choice after Wesley Snipes, Jet Li, Vin Diesel and Sylvester Stallone turned down the role of Agent Ecks. Liu's role of Agent Sever was originally written to be played by a man.
