Fywell's big screen debut was his dramatisation of Dodie Smith's classic novel I Capture The Castle.
He made his name in TV, notably with such work as Ruth Rendell's A Fatal Inversion starring Douglas Hodge and Jeremy Northam.
He also directed Dark Adapted Eye, Norma Jean and Marilyn as well as The Ice House with Douglas Craig and Corin Redgrave.
Fywell received a BAFTA for Woman in White and a Press and Broadcasting Guild Award for the Channel 4 series North Square.
Theatre work has included Hanif Kureshi's The Mother Country and No Hand Signals - which he also wrote - at the National Theatre.
