Jim Carrey is totally back on form in this laugh-out-loud comedy littered with his stock in trade sights gags and facial contortions.
TV reporter Bruce Nolan seems to think that God has it in for him. I mean, if God had it in for you wouldn't be dating Jennifer Aniston, but anyway, he's not satisfied with his lot.
He's miserable about being a 40-year-old ker-razy news hack, who gets all the 'wacky' stories, while rival reporter Evan gets the job of anchoring the nightly news bulletin.
'There's nothing wrong with making people laugh,' girlfriend Jen tells him. 'I have no credibility,' Bruce replies. 'They keep making me do this stupid stuff,' hilariously referencing a real desire for Tinsletown's respect.
So he makes a desperate plea to the Big Man man upstairs, who promptly summons him to a meeting.
'Good luck with the Apocolypse. You suck,' Bruce tells him.
Morgan Freeman, beautifully type-cast as God, takes a holiday and grants him all his powers to see if 'you can do it better then.'
Jim Carrey with the Lord's powers? It's a comedy gift! Bruce Almighty gets to abuse his new skills, creating all sorts of hilarious havoc, before learning the responsibilities of divinity.
The Moses moment, which I shan't spoil by describing fully, is just brilliant. And turning your car into a Ferrari and making your girlfriend's tits bigger all seem logical if one had the power of God.
Apart from a bit of all-American moralising this is very good fun with plenty of vintage Ace Ventura style Carrey silliness. All that, alongside sharp direction and a funny script, will have you chuckling into your popcorn.
