Batman Begins

A fantastic 21st century retelling of the Dark Knight legend that sees Christian Bale hot under the cowl ridding Gotham of its criminal fraternity, while director Christopher Nolan keeps his cool behind the camera. A great cast make the best of Nolan and David S Goyer's excellent script that banishes all nightmare memories of Batman & Robin and makes this the best Batman yet by a Gotham City mile.

Love him or hate him Batman has embedded himself in the cultural psyche.

From comic strip masked man through Saturday morning pictures urban cowboy, sixties camp, graphic novel grit and big screen carnival - everyone knows the Bat-Signal.

So is this latest reworking any good?

No. It's brilliant...

Tight, stylish direction and a script that wisely borrows from classic Batman comics The Man Who Falls, Year One and The Long Halloween wed happily with a stellar cast led by Christian Bale one-notch down from his American Psycho menace.

An origins movie, Batman Begins expands on the flashbacks Tim Burton peppered his original movie with, depicting the rise of billionaire Bruce Wayne from traumatised boy witnessing the murder of both parents to dark detective sweeping through Gotham's underworld.

Going back to the comics, the movie reveals how the preppy rich boy transforms into the caped crusader, via a pilgrimage to the East where he meets Ninja cult leader Ra's Al-Ghul and turns anger and vengeance into something far more powerful.

Returning to a Gotham City in the pocket of organised crime, his new identity finds a home under Wayne Manor and makes use of the technology invented by the company that made him a billionaire.

The Nolan/Goyer dynamic duo have tapped into a completely different vein from the previous outings - delighting both Bat-fanatics and audiences venturing into the Dark Knight for the first time by avoiding camp or Gothic overkill and having a ball playing the premise of a bat-suited vigilante cleaning the streets deadly serious.

Nolan's keep it real approach extends to a rejection of flimsy CGI in favour of location shooting (on the mean streets of Chicago), and overcomes the pitfalls of camp villains by making Cillian Murphy's pyscho-psychiatrist Jonathan Crane (aka Scarecrow) a nightmare image of lunacy in a sackcloth hood, armed with a potent fear toxin.

Liam Neeson, Ken Watanabe, Michael Caine, Tom Wilkinson and Gary Oldman join Bale and Murphy in the defiantly un-American cast (Morgan Freeman and Katie Holmes stand alone representing the US of A), providing formidable acting talent that echoes the Oscar-winning brace of Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman who guaranteed the first Superman soared above lowbrow expectations.

An epilogue hints at the great things to follow (the Joker!), and going back to the beginning and erasing Joel Schumacher's abominations was the best choice Christopher Nolan could have made.

Christian Bale is perfect as Bruce Wayne and his masked alter ego, Liam Neeson is spot on as Ducart and whoever cast Michael Caine as Alfred deserves a medal. The Dark Knight is well and truly back.

These days a lot is expected for DC comics heroes to make an impact on the big screen, with so many Marvel heroes hogging the spotlight - Spiderman, X-Men, Daredevil, Blade to name a few. With David S Goyer's breathtaking script, the Dark Knight is given a clean slate, blowing previous Batman films out the sky. The whole notion and essence of the comics is converted flawlessly onto the screen. The masses are drooling for a sequel...watch out Marvel!!

Superhero movies seem to be everywhere these days, but good CGI does not make a film. Just because the source material is a comic book it does not mean the characters lack depth or layers. BATMAN BEGINS is a revelation. It is extremely faithful to the gritty, dark and sometimes horrifying origins of the Dark Knight and it executed in a compelling and entertaining way. I found myself punching the air with delight and weeping tears of joy forty minutes into this flick, it's all kinds of right.
