A moving romantic drama, set in the claustrophobic American Midwest, that looks at the emotions aroused when a devoted father and husband of 25 years announces that he is a woman trapped in a man's body. Britain's Tom Wilkinson gives a wonderful, understated performance as the tortured Roy, and Jessica Lange gives one of her great sympathetic performances as his confused wife, Irma. Writer-director Jane Anderson handles the material with sensitivity (it's based on her play), using touches of humour to lighten the drama. Start watching, and you'll stay involved.
