Marlee Matlin, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of the hearing and speech-impaired girl in Children of a Lesser God (1986), stars in this Canadian thriller. Here, she plays a hearing-impaired character, Jane, who gets into sign language conversation with lawyer Andrew (Michael Dudikoff) during a visit to an art gallery, which leads to a love affair. When Jane's abusive husband is found dead, she asks Andrew to act for her, while Andrew's wife Debra (Sophie Lorain), also a lawyer, ends up on the prosecution team. We've seen this sort of set-up before, but the plot has enough twists to keep hold the interest and the performances pass muster. Undemanding entertainment.
