Australian films of recent times can be guaranteed to be stunning to look at, and this horror thriller, a sort of Boar's Jaws, is so sumptuously shot as to be at times almost over the top. The ending is very exciting if predictable, but it's all together a most unpleasant piece with its sadistic villains and emphasis on cruelty to animals (with a token nod to their protectors). Good performances from Gregory Harrison, Bill Kerr and Judy Morris, and some highly stylised colour compositions are major points in the film's favour, but the giant hog of the title remains resolutely uncharismatic and no rival to other famous monsters of filmland.
