This Deep South drama is actor Simon Callow's directing debut. Vanessa Redgrave stars as an eccentric Southern lady who turns her general store into a moonshine-serving café, helped by her hunch-backed midget cousin (Cork Hubbert). Then one day her husband (Keith Carradine), who she kicked out on their wedding night, turns up to create havoc. The trouble with all this is that it doesn't make one iota of sense. Why did Carradine want to marry someone as abrasive and unattractive as Redgrave's character and why did she then throw him out? Who is the midget and why does he take Carradine's side after Redgrave gives him a home? The script offers no satisfactory or satisfying answers. Callow has a good setting, some interesting characters but no real story to tell.
