Ahead of its time with its anarchic black humour and observations on apathy and terror in living in New York City with its (then) 300 unmotivated killings a year, this started life as a flop play in 1967. It may have failed on Broadway but it was a big hit in England where the Royal Shakespeare Company picked it as the company's first American play. Alan Arkin directs with great wit and insight (it remains his best effort at directing to date) and he coaxes convincing performances from an all-star cast, including original Broadway cast member Elliott Gould, who also co-produced the film.
