An honourable if uninspired remake of the Oscar-winning 1966 film, re-adapted by Robert Bolt from his own play. Charlton Heston is predictably stately as Sir Thomas More, and is far outshone both by John Gielgud's dour Wolsey and Benjamin Whitrow's malevolent Thomas Cromwell. Heston also directed, with his son Fraser as producer. Vanessa Redgrave, who plays Lady Alice More, had a cameo role as Anne Boleyn in the original.
