Shafts of wry Scottish wit brighten this meandering road movie, as a failed graphic artist (Peter Capaldi, who also wrote it) attempts to drive from London to Glasgow in his clapped-out car in a bid to claim a share of the family inheritance. Along the way, he picks up Wendy (Elaine Collins, the real-life Mrs Capaldi), who clearly has some dark secret by the way she hides from the police. Still, she proves adept at making the car go when it conks out. The film's major problem is that it's too full of 'just as if' situations, esecially a silly interlude where the couple tries to buy bus tickets, which seems inserted for the sake of some arch humour. The ending's nice, though, even if it's the one you expect from such a gently humorous film. Capaldi goes at his self-penned hero full throttle; Collins is refreshingly unglamorous as the girl; Simon Callow does a nice guest shot. Richard Wilson and Jeremy Northam are also in the supporting cast.
