Although probably a bit too graphic at times for young children, and certainly red in tooth and claw, this is a superbly shot, old-fashioned Disney adventure that will please teenagers and pre-teens of a stern disposition. Nonnie (Reese Witherspoon), a game warden's daughter, and Harry (Ethan Randall), a visitor from the city, are two teenagers living on an African wildlife reserve. A brutal attack by a gang of ivory poachers leaves the kids orphaned and, as the only witnesses to the murders of their parents, they are forced to flee into the barren Kalahari Desert. There, they face hunger, exhaustion, sandstorms and wild animals, with the killers all the while hot on their trail. The trek's a shade on the slow side, but pictorial qualities compensate, the acting is staunch, and the elephants nearly steal the show.
